One of the most common questions we receive is about the difference between our 18k Gold Plated and Solid 18k Gold pieces. Both are beautiful. Both are made with precious metal. But they are different, and you deserve to understand exactly what you are choosing between.
18k Gold Plated — Three Layers of Precious Metal
Our gold plated pieces are not standard gold plated jewellery. Most gold plated jewellery is built on a base of brass or copper — cheap metals that can irritate the skin, tarnish quickly, and give the plating nothing substantial to hold onto.
Ours are different. Every Tatreez gold plated piece is built on a 925 sterling silver base — 92.5% pure silver, a precious metal in its own right. Before the 18k gold is applied, a palladium layer is bonded to the silver. Palladium is a rare metal from the platinum family — it creates a protective barrier that stops oxidation, locks the gold in place, and ensures the finish stays brighter for longer.
The result is three layers of precious metal in every piece: silver, palladium, and gold. Nothing cheap. Nothing hidden. Fully hypoallergenic, safe for the most sensitive skin, and crafted with the weight and substance that precious metal deserves.
Solid 18k Gold — The Real Thing
Our solid 18k gold pieces are cast from 75% pure gold throughout — not a coating, not a layer, but gold all the way through. These are pieces that hold intrinsic precious metal value, that will never lose their finish, and that are built to last not just a lifetime but beyond it.
We cast our solid gold pieces heavier than market standard — because we believe gold should feel like gold. The weight is intentional. The presence is intentional. This is heirloom calibre jewellery.
Which Should You Choose?
Both are beautiful expressions of the same design and heritage. The right choice depends on what you are looking for:
Choose 18k Gold Plated if you want the warmth and presence of gold at an accessible price point, with the confidence that the piece is built on precious metal and will wear well.
Choose Solid 18k Gold if you want a piece that holds lasting value, that you will wear for decades, and that you might one day pass on. If you want the real thing — this is it.
Both are made to order, both arrive in our signature gift packaging, and both carry the same heritage and craftsmanship. The difference is in the metal. You know which one is right for you.
