Before there was a collection, there was the motif. And before the motif was cast in gold, it was stitched in thread — by the women of Beit Lahem, across centuries, in a city that became synonymous with the art of Palestinian embroidery.

The Qamar Beit Lahem — the Moon of Bethlehem — is one of the most iconic geometric cross-stitch patterns in Palestinian tatreez. It is the motif that inspired the entire Tatreez Jewellery collection. The piece that started everything. And its story deserves to be told properly.

Beit Lahem — Heart of Palestinian Embroidery

Bethlehem has long been recognised as one of the great centres of Palestinian craft and artistry. While the city is globally known for its spiritual significance, within Palestinian culture it holds an equally revered place as a city of extraordinary embroidery — where gold and silver threads were woven into garments worn at the most significant moments of a woman's life.

The women of Beit Lahem were celebrated for their extravagant use of metallic threads — gold and silver worked into the fabric as symbols of prestige, wealth, and identity. A Bethlehem bridal dress was considered among the finest achievements of Palestinian textile art, its embroidery a statement of family heritage and cultural pride.

The Motif

The Moon of Bethlehem is a geometric cross-stitch pattern — an expanding, eight-pointed form that radiates outward like a star unfolding into a moon. It is bold and precise, commanding and spiritual all at once.

The motif evokes guidance — the moon as a light in darkness, a point of orientation, a constant in an ever-changing sky. In Palestinian culture, as in much of the Arab world, the moon carries deep spiritual resonance. It marks time, guides travellers, and signals the rhythm of sacred months.

Worn on the body, the Qamar Beit Lahem was more than decoration. It was a statement of where you came from and what you carried with you.

In Gold

When we set out to translate the Moon of Bethlehem into jewellery, we knew it had to be done with weight and intention. The motif demanded substance — it could not be rendered thin or delicate without losing its power.

Cast in solid 18k gold or built on a 925 sterling silver base with a palladium layer and 18k gold finish, the Moon of Bethlehem Pendant is the origin piece of the Tatreez collection. It stands alone — no star variant, no companion piece. The moon, as it has always been, complete in itself.

This is the piece that started everything. Wear it as a reminder of where this all began.
